Thomas Walsh is an award-winning Gulf Coast based interdisciplinary artist who has been making and selling his artwork since 1980 working or being self employed in a variety of industries such as air brush, signs/murals, screen printing, computer graphics/illustration, computer animation 2D/3D, 3D modeling/textures, photography/video/audio production/post production and programming.
He is currently know for his delightfully quirky Eco-friendly, up-cycled wood carvings. His pieces are designed to look and feel hand made; rustic, folksy, salty, old Florida style.
Around 2018 he began exploring power carving as a quick means to make and sell some artwork to be able to get out of debt. During this period in his life, he almost threw away his professional art career for a 9-5 minimum wage job just to make ends meet. Today, thousands of his carved pieces are in private and public collections along the Gulf Coast.
Why Eco-Art? He started carving with construction and home renovation scraps because it was free. He took notice of the vast amounts of wasted natural resources during home renovations and construction. All of his wood materials are reclaimed rather than buying new wood.
Sustainability, Each year he goes through thousands of board feet of wood making artwork which equals less trees that need to be harvested and less materials that take up space in our landfills. Currently he prefers to work with older wood from 1950s-1970s. The wild old growth lumber simply does not compare to today's fast growth lumber.
He uses standard hand held rotary power tools. He does not use chainsaws, no CNC machines, no laser cutting/engravers or AI technologies in his handcrafted pieces. Sure a CNC machine or laser cutter would be more efficient but he's displeased with the saturation of mass produced products that people are labeling as hand made art.
